Rare Design Gem: Erik Herløw Cabinet Up for Auction

It is a true masterpiece of furniture by Danish architect Erik Herløw that will go under the hammer at our Live Auction on 27 March. The cabinet was originally a unique and thoughtful gift from the employees of the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Factory to their then-director.

The wall-mounted cabinet was crafted in 1956 by master cabinetmaker Jacob Kjær and seamlessly combines superb woodworking with 17 unique ceramic works from some of Denmark’s most significant artisans—including Axel Salto, Gerd Bøgelund, and Kresten Bloch.

The cabinet was originally created as a special gift from the employees of the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Factory to their iconic managing director, Christian Christensen, on the occasion of his 70th birthday.

Now, collectors and design enthusiasts have a rare opportunity to acquire this design treasure when it goes under the hammer at the Live Auction for modern design and decorative art on 27 March at 4:00 PM

The cabinet is filled with unique works from some of Denmark’s most significant artisans.

A Snapshot of Danish Design

The cabinet’s elegant execution in Rio rosewood, with inlays and shelves in Ceylon lemonwood, showcases Danish furniture craftsmanship at its finest. Inside, the cabinet features a refined structure with a “floating” box and 18 profiled compartments—17 of which are filled with unique ceramics, specifically created for this cabinet.

"It is truly amazing that we can present this one-of-a-kind cabinet at our upcoming design auction. The combination of Erik Herløw’s timeless design, Jacob Kjær’s masterful craftsmanship, and the 17 small ceramic works makes this cabinet something extraordinary. It tells a story of craftsmanship at the highest level and stands as a snapshot of the quality of Danish design in 1956.”

Anna Berger Widenborg, Head of Modern Design & Decorative Art at Bruun Rasmussen

In addition to the ceramic works, the cabinet holds a special detail—a delicately dovetailed drawer containing a dust brush with ostrich feathers and a finely turned bone handle. The cabinet also comes with a small, leather-bound catalog featuring etchings by Mads Stage, documenting the ceramic pieces inside.

An elegant dovetailed drawer reveals a dusting brush and a mini reference book on the ceramic works.
Besides the cabinet and the 17 unique works, this figure is also included, depicting Christian Christensen himself, designed by Herluf Jensenius.
