Exceptional coins
A common denominator of this auction catalogue is that all featured lots are outstanding in one way or another. They are not necessarily expensive but are, indeed, exceptionally beautiful, interesting or rare.
A splendid example of rarity is a penning issued during the rule of Olaf Hunger in the late 11th century. Coins minted under his reign are generally considered out of bounds for private collectors, and not since 1929 has such a coin been featured at auction.
Coins of beauty include magnificent specimens of excellent condition or accomplished artistic merit, such as the selection of splendid types from Greek antiquity.
In some cases, such as with Christian VII’s taler from Rethwisch, all aspects of the art of engraving unite to reflect sublime quality, resolved mastery and artistic excellence.
The auction is characterised by distinguished suites of foreign coins from England and Austria, among other places, which no doubt will garner attention among international numismatists.
And last but not least, the auction includes a unique highlight collection of coins minted for Magnus, the younger brother of Frederik II. The collection includes 104 rare coins that many collectors would no doubt like to see auctioned individually. However, one must consider that recreating such a complete collection of interesting types were it to be divided would no doubt be an impossible mission.
