Hand-knotted carpets as investment?

Twenty or thirty years ago, many Oriental carpets were sold as so-called 'investment carpets'. Prices would be inflated to levels that made the investment element a self-fulfilling prophecy – a prophecy that gained greater and greater truth value as the carpets became more and more expensive.

In the 1990s, however, the bottom fell out of the market and carpet prices slumped. This happened in consequence of several factors that all helped accelerate the price fall: The state of war in Iran meant an increased production of inferior products. Buyers pulled out of the market in great numbers now that prices had ceased to rise, and the predominantly minimalist trend in interior decorating made the demand for carpets even smaller.

Today, the possibilities for making a good buy are greater than ever before. With a little luck, you will be able to buy a carpet at DKK 10,000 – 20,000, a carpet that would have costs three or four times as much twenty years ago.

Bruun Rasmussen's auction No. 112 offers many different opportunities to enrich your home with carpets, e.g. from the Heritz area. The selection includes a beautiful specimen from c. 1900 with a 'star-shaped' medallion on an orange ground with white corner ornamentations and impressive semi-antique Bidjar carpets with rose medallion and foliage. Among the brighter carpets we find a number of high-quality Nain carpets, including a large and most beautiful medallion carpet with silk and approximately a million knots per square metre and a smaller specimen, measuring 252 x 177 cm, in the same high quality.
