Paintings from Skagen in Vejle

P.S. Krøyer and Anna and Michael Ancher are decorating the walls of Pedersholm in Vejle, when Bruun Rasmussen holds Skagen Sale in August.

Last August we were delighted to present the first half of an impressive private collection of works by the group of artists known as the Skagen painters. This August we proudly present the second half of the very same collection, which features a number of paintings recently exhibited at Arken Museum of Modern Art. This public interest in the collection underlines the quality of the works and several of them could be classified as true museum pieces.

The collection as a whole offers a view of the central themes in the art of Skagen – the everyday life of the local fishers and the life of the artist community – and as always the poetic use of light plays a leading role in many of the works. Amongst the highlights by the female artist Anna Ancher is a loving portrait of her mother, depicted while reading in the blue sitting room with almost impressionistic rays of light dancing on the walls. Another is displaying the family life in the small fishing village, where everybody participates in the daily chores – even the children who help with the fishing nets.

The private collection also holds two beautiful portraits of Anna Ancher by her husband Michael Ancher. One portrays her in candlelight by the status symbol of the time, the piano, and one captures her while sewing by the window in a sunlit room. A masterpiece by Michael Ancher is the portrait of a young woman cleaning a large shiny codfish. The central placing of the codfish in the painting indicates the importance of the fish for the entire population and life in Skagen’s small fishing community.

Apart from the private collection, we also present a number of other fine works. One example is Michael Ancher’s painting of two young men riding horses in the water by Skagen beach on a sunny day. Another example is the light painting of the fiddler surrounded by children on a summer day in Skagen, also by Michael Ancher, which shows his great coloristic skills.

A highlight by P.S. Krøyer is the very charming nude portrait of the model Lydia Lund, better known as Zitla. As something rather rare this painting brings the study of the nude into the art of Skagen.

We bid you welcome to both preview and auction!
