Special Collections of Coins
At two coin auctions, we are presenting some collections that go beyond the ordinary. Although they are split across two auctions, there is one word that covers them all: Rare! With a consistently broad selection, everyone will be able to find something missing from their collection when the auctions take place on May 11th.
The History of Denmark Told Through Coins You’ll also find a Christian VII ducat from 1792 — the famous “Wild Man Ducat” from Altona — along with coins from Denmark’s former overseas possessions, such as a Christian V, lead cash coin from Tranquebar (1687), and a 10 Cents piece from the Danish West Indies issued by O. Ffrench & Co. There’s even a chance to own a piece of Greenland with a Frederik IX (2 kroner) coin from 1953 — a rare “minister’s specimen” type with no denomination indicated. This wide-ranging selection of coins will be offered across two auctions on 11 May: |

Denmark’s First Coin
A truly exceptional example of Denmark’s first coin will also be available at the auction. It is a Sceatta from the years 703–710, minted in Ribe. This type of coin is known as the “Wodan/Monster” type, as it features the face of Wodan (Odin) on one side and, on the other, an ithyphallic monster.
Since fertility and generative power played a central role in the religious beliefs of the time, several gods are depicted in ithyphallic form — that is, with an erect phallus.

The distinctive Wodan/Monster coin originates from Ribe, a town that stood out due to its strategic location near Denmark’s west coast. Ribe hosted a bustling trading center with a significant number of foreign merchants, making the town part of a larger Northwestern European trade network.
As one of the first places in Denmark to adopt this foreign cultural influence, Ribe became a pioneer in the use of coinage. At the time, barter was the standard method of exchange in Denmark — people traded goods directly for what they needed. The idea of paying for goods by placing coins on the counter was entirely unfamiliar.
