Outstanding Champagne Collection for Lovers of Grande Marques and Prestige Cuvées

Deep under Champagne is a kilometres-long maze of cellars carved out of the limestone, where darkness and cold reign. These are the ideal storage conditions for champagne among the producers who, for centuries, have passed on their exquisite “savoir faire” from generation to generation. On 14 December, the hammer will fall on a particularly exclusive collection of precious bubbly.

The extravagant champagne collection spans six decades, with vintages ranging from 1953 to 2008, and consists of a total of 391 bottles, which together are estimated at more than DKK 1.3 million. According to Thomas Rosendahl Andersen, Head of Department – Wine at Bruun Rasmussen, it is an extremely attractive collection, which particularly stands out due to its unique provenance.

We’re very much looking forward to offering this champagne collection, which stands out not only for the sheer scale of it but also for its excellent provenance. Most of the collection has been purchased directly fhrough one intermediary from excellent cellars in Champagne, where the wines have always been stored. So the wines have never been for sale in shops, and the storage has therefore also been top notch. I have never seen a champagne collection with a provenance as good as this one.”

Being able to enjoy a glass of champagne takes a certain meticulousness when it comes to the selection of bottles as well as an in-depth knowledge of the person you are dealing with. This collection is an excellent example of such quality. This champagne demands recognition, because we’re talking the absolute crème de la crème of producers, old acquaintances who for generations have amazed and enthralled everyone who loves grandes marques and their prestige cuvées.

War Champagne and Other Rarities

Among others, Thomas Rosendahl Andersen highlights a Moët & Chandon 1914, estimated at DKK 40,000–50,000, which dates from the year when the First World War began. He describes it as extremely rare, and a bottle that you’ll probably never find again in this condition.

And the Moët Dom Perignon Œnothèque 1959 up for auction, estimated at DKK 24,000–32,000, also deserves attention. “Œnothèque” is a designation often used in connection with champagne and other wines. In the case of Moët & Chandon, Œnothèque refers to a specific series of vintage champagnes. These champagnes are created by letting the wine age in the bottle for a long period, usually several decades, before being released for sale. The extended bottle aging on the lees, i.e. yeast residues, in the champagne bottle allows the wine to develop complexity and depth. It is a champagne that sets itself apart from others because vintage 1959 must be highlighted for its rarity.

1 bt. Champagne "Vintage" Moët & Chandon 1914 A-A/B (bn). Estimate: DKK 40,000-50,000.
1 bt. Champagne "Cristal" Rosé, Louis Roederer 1974 A (hf/in). Estimate: DKK 12,000-16,000.
1 bt. Champagne Dom Pérignon "Oenothéque", Moët & Chandon 1959 A (hf/in). Owc.. Estimate: DKK 24,000-32,000.

Veuve Clicquot

Other good buys mentioned by the wine expert are the older Veuve Clicquot bottles, which are estimated from DKK 1,000 and up to DKK 5,000. Nicknamed “The Yellow Widow”, Veuve Clicquot did not have the best reputation in its day. It was considered dry and mostly made for the masses, but according to Thomas Rosendahl Larsen, the bottles are a really good buy, and they age well. Pure enjoyment in a bottle.

It’s rare to see collections with such excellent provenance on the market from the region where the passion for champagne is deepest and truest. One can only be inspired by that. Bid away!
