Historic Hammer Prices in 2023

There were colourful, unused stamps, exciting postal history and incredible rarities at this autumn’s Catalogue Auction. Several original collections came directly from the collectors in their entirety, with both Denmark and the Danish West Indies well represented. A few high jumpers must be mentioned here:

Court engraver Martinus William Ferslew (1801–1852) made printing blocks for a couple of the Danish National Bank’s banknotes in 1835-51, and, based on his own drawings, he engraved Denmark’s first two stamps, showing a denomination of four and two rigsbankskilling (National Bank shillings) respectively, for the General Post Directorate, which were issued in 1851. The only known specimen in private ownership, this first proposal for a Danish stamp, engraved in copper plate by court engraver Ferslew and printed in a clear, dark brown-red colour, achieved a hammer price of DKK 130,000. The stamp was part of Lasse Nielsen’s fantastic Danish Proofs and Essays collection.

From the collection of another profiled collector, Klaus Bonde Larsen, came an unusual exhibition object of the highest quality, the only known pair of the green overprint from 1902. The pair fetched a hammer price of DKK 55,000. Bonde Larsen’s exquisite collection also produced the surprise of the year: a splendid address card franked with several fine stamps and stamped in St. Thomas Harbour in 1905, which went for an amazing DKK 75,000.

1905. St. Thomas Havn, 1 stamp green/blue and 2 stamps red/brown as well as Stamp VIII, 50 bit, yellow/brown on magnificent address card sent by ship from St. Thomas 23.8.1909 to Copenhagen. Ex. Klaus Bonde Larsen. Hammer price: DKK 75,000

Changes to the Auctions

The coming year will also see changes to our valuations and minimum bids. With effect from the Online Auction in week 10, the starting price for bids will generally be 50% of the estimate for items under DKK 10,000 and 70% for items over DKK 10,000.  At the same time, the minimum valuation per lot will change to DKK 600.

So, look forward to unretouched spandrels, inverted watermarks, original gum for connoisseurs and postal history offering glimpses of all manner of history at the upcoming auctions in 2024.
