Hans Smidth and the Heaths of Jutland

This year, it is 100 years since the painter Hans Smidth died, and here at Bruun Rasmussen we celebrate our dear national painter with a theme auction in his honour.

At the auction, we present a number of Hans Smidth's (1839-1917) works, which include his well-known depictions of people, interiors and landscape motifs from the heaths of Jutland. The raw depiction of nature and the unsentimental portraits of people make him an interesting artist, whom we are proud to present at auction.

Jutland up Close

In 1854, 15-year-old Hans Smidth moved from Kerteminde to Skive, where he for the first time became acquainted with the heaths of Jutland. Both the landscape and the people of the area made such a deep impression on him that the area stayed with him throughout his artistic career.

An Emphasis on the Seen and the Sensed

After being introduced to the painting style of Realism in Copenhagen, Smidth's landscape paintings become more grounded, open for interpretation and, in some cases, almost sketch-like. The focus is on the seen and the sensed, making his works appear more honest and real.
