Valuable Emergency Money

A small portion of philately consists of the so-called " Emergency Money". They originate from the Second World War, during which the copper coins were stashed away, since the copper material was worth more than the coin’s denomination. This led to a significant shortage of small change, and therefore enterprising businessmen came up with the idea of placing a 1 øre stamp in a cellophane bag along with a piece of advertisement for their companies. The idea was well received, and before long this kind of stamp money was being used in most of Denmark. The National Bank was, however, quick to produce new øre coins, and the period with emergency money lasted only a short while.

Today, we know of more than 5,000 different money stamps with stamps in denominations of 1, 2, 4, 5 and 10 øre. At Bruun Rasmussen we have recently sold Arne Andreassen’s impressive collection of money stamps, and now we will begin to parcel out Jørgen Sømod’s very large collection. We are currently seeing a strong interest in money stamps on the market, and this has caused other customers to consign material as well. Because of this the April auction includes a wide range of money stamps.

More Collections up for Auction

At the auction we will also commence parcelling out a very beautiful collection of mint, classic Danish stamps, four blocks and larger units, which are all in excellent quality. We have also received a large collection from an international customer with advertising stamps, loose pairs as well as beautiful letters and stamp booklets.

Auction and Preview

The auction will begin to close on Sunday, 23 April at 6 pm. The preview will be open on Thursday between 10 am and 5 pm, and on Friday between 10 am and 3:30 pm at Baltikavej 10 in Copenhagen's Nordhavn.
