Passion for Taschen

Pop icons, photos and ”fabulous” fetish books. Taschen is known for their bold and popular photo books on art, large derrières, sports and much more. This time the photo auction opens with a series of the award-winning publishing company’s flamboyant photo books.

Giant Books About Giant Stars

Large derrières, cool movies and hot pop icons are on the menu in Taschen’s enormous back catalogue. Marilyn Monroe and The Beatles are dealt with just as respectably as David Hockney and Jeff Koons. The giant icons reveal themselves or are on display in giant monographs in giant formats. Several of the books are so large that they are equipped with special stands to be placed on. For instance the well-known SUMO edition on Helmut Newton that weighs 35 kilos and has long been a sought-after auction lot in spite of having been printed in no less than 10,000 copies.

Award Winning Eye for the ”Exquisite”

Taschen’s brand is in itself gigantic, not least because of the company’s creator Benedikt Taschen’s unique eye for the ”exquisite” in regards to what catches the attention of the viewer as well as the ability to pay attention to the details. The Taschen photo books are cared for in an unprecedented degree. The image selection, text, layout and the book's other equipment and packaging all receive that extra touch and the publications are often created in collaboration with the artists themselves. Most of the books are therefore available in both a standard edition and in exclusive limited editions with signed original photographs and other bling factors.

Last year the ability to combine mainstream interest with controversial subjects resulted in the prize for best photographic publisher, which was awarded to Benedikt Taschen from The Royal Photographic Society. His publications have managed to put the photograph into play and spread awareness of the medium to a large audience. This year, a museum in Maastricht picked up on the theme and in connection with TEFAF, one of the world's leading art fairs, the museum held a special exhibition showcasing the world's largest collection of exclusive Taschen works.

Godfather under the Hammer

A number of these flamboyant photo books in signed editions are now offered at the photo auction. Among the books you can find one of just a hundred signed copies of Steve Schapiro’s “The Godfather Album” with an original photograph of Marlon Brando, signed by Schapiro. At the auction we can also present books on Olafur Eliasson and surf photography. Several of the books are out of print from the publishing company and lie unopened in their original shipping boxes.
