The Hammer Fell No Less than 6,500 times for Wine Lots in 2016

If you want to learn more about the trends and tendencies we saw in 2016, then continue reading here. More than 35 % of the sales in the past year were wines from Bordeaux. It is a region that for many years has had a clear presence at our auctions. The wines of the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s in particular enjoy a great demand.

It is certainly not a requirement to sell your wine in full cases, since many of the region’s wines are so expensive that it can be a good idea to sell them individually as single bottles instead. The 1. Cru wines are still the most sought after alongside the absolute top wines from Saint-Emilion and Pomerol, but when it comes to wines that rank just below the highest level, we can boast of some of the most competitive prices compared to the international market. We therefore have international customers that choose us as their sales channel instead of the better-known auction houses.

The Small Region with the Great Wines

That wine from Burgundy is more popular and in demand than ever can clearly also be felt. More than 1,000 sales were achieved in 2016 the small region with the great wines. The still growing interest for the almost mythical wines creates a steadily increasing demand as well as rising prices. It is self evident that Burgundy’s own production cannot satisfy the global appetite there is for the wines from the finest winemakers, which can also be seen in the prices for the smaller wines that at the moment are experiencing a boost as well.

Always Popular Champagne

Champagne accounts for 10% of all the sales in 2016. Champagne has been, just as Burgundy, a highly sought after region in recent years. Many small producers choose to tap their own wines rather than sell them to the larger wineries. This has created many exciting results, and not least prices that make them highly marketable. At the same time the interest has increased significantly regarding the vintage wines from the larger houses. Well-kept bottles from 1996, 1990, 1989, 1988, etc. are of course of particular interest, but we can already now see a huge interest for the 2008 vintage for instance.

Wines from Italy

Italy is also among the classic wine countries from where many famous wines are regular guests at our auctions. Piedmont is the most popular, thanks to Barolo and Barbaresco. We have experienced several spectacular auction prices for winemakers such as Giacosa and Monfortino during the past year, but many others have also achieved great prices. Masseto seems to live a life of its own when it comes to wines from Tuscany. We can see a constant increase of wines from this region, not least the wines that have spent a decade in cellars. If you find yourself with a bottle or more of these, then get in contact with us to hear what the market price for your vintage is.

Properly Stored Spanish Wines

During the past year we have seen prices for Spanish wines that we have never experienced before. As the sale of a large private cellar from Valencia went underway, the interest for older wines, especially from Vega Sicilia, increased. We have therefore achieved record prices such as DKK 9,000 for a single bottle from 1962, DKK 6,000 for a 1950 vintage and DKK 7,000 for a 1946 – all incredibly rare wines that possess tremendous durability, making them particularly suitable as auction wines. The Rioja wines have also enjoyed a great deal of interest. A common denominator for the high auction prices has been older vintages that have been properly stored.

The overall conclusion paints a clear picture of the classic wines being very strong on the auction market, and if you are in possession of a well-preserved wine of a respectable age, then you have a great trump card to tempt auction buyers with.

We suggest that you contact us for a non-binding assessment of your collection, and we look forward to hearing from you.
