Fairy Tale Jewellery

Jewellery by Arje Griegst, stylish classics from Cartier and decorative vintage items from the Belle Époque – we can present quite a broad selection of jewellery at the late summer auction in Bredgade.

The auction can present Danish jewellery design of the finest quality with two necklaces and a unique ring by the Danish goldsmith, artist and designer Arje Griegst (1938-2016). His imaginative design idiom was inspired by nature, the ancient Greeks, Gaudi and the infinity of outer space. The rich and fairy tale style became an artistic calling card that made his work stand out from the otherwise stringent Scandinavian design tradition.

Griegst and Georg Jensen

As the son of the goldsmith and chaser Baruch Griegst, who came to Denmark from Lithuania around 1900, Arje Griegst followed in his father's footsteps. He completed his training with the silversmith and artist Just Andersen in 1960, and after four years with his own workshop, Arje Griegst presented a series of sketches for rings in a completely new idiom to Georg Jensen's legendary leader Anders Hostrup-Pedersen. The sketches were so well received that Griegst was sent to Paris to produce more of them, so the jewellery could be put into production.

The majority of Griegst’s jewellery only exists in one single copy, which is also the case with the auction’s sculpted ring "Solopgangssøjle" (Sunrise Pillar) designed for Georg Jensen in Paris 1963-64. The ring was made with the cire perdue technique to achieve a more artistic freedom of expression. This technique is especially known from the manufacturing of bronze sculptures and is rarely used with jewellery. Griegst’s creations are today represented at several renowned museums throughout the world, including Designmuseum Danmark, the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, the V&A in London and the Metropolitan Museum in New York.

Belle Époque – A Sense of History

If you are dreaming of historical vintage jewellery, which also inspired Arje Griegst, then the auction’s decorative jewellery items from the Belle Époque are worth taking a closer look at. The period is especially known for the social life of Paris around 1900, where the city's elite enjoyed themselves at the numerous theatres, cafes and cabarets. At the auction there is a fine selection of these very feminine pieces of jewellery, including a large choker with diamonds and pearls, a diamond necklace and a brooch with an untreated purple star sapphire.

Classic Cartier

In the very modern end of the selection of jewellery we find a series of stylish items from international jewellers such as Cartier, Bulgari, Buccellati, Van Cleef & Arpels, Gübelin, Chopard, Tiffany & Co. and Ole Lynggaard. This time we can present our largest selection ever of Cartier's exclusive jewellery, including a twisted gold bangle that belonged to the American actress Farrah Fawcett (1947-2009), who was a style icon of the 1970s and known for her role on the television show "Charlie's Angels".

The auction also offers a pair of elegant creole ear clips from 1970-80, a timeless "Trinity" ring with numerous brilliant-cut diamonds and a "Nigeria" ring with diamonds totalling 6.00 ct. They all come from the French jeweller Cartier, which since 1847 has produced some of the world's most exclusive jewellery and wristwatches.
