Coins with Christian symbols

Throughout the ages, Christian symbols have been cherished motives on coins. We end the year with coin auction 1551, which is packed with various Christian Christmas references.

The cross, the most well known Christian symbol of them all, first appeared in Denmark during the reign of Harald Bluetooth, and it is still there on coins of today - on top of the crown.

Here we have chosen to highlight some of the coins with Christian references from the current auction. We begin with coins from Emperor Augustus and continue with the famous "Tribute Penny", which we in the spirit of Christmas have no less than two copies of at the auction. The next example comes from a brief stop with the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great - the Emperor who made Christianity a state religion.

Jesus was often depicted on the coins from the Byzantine or Eastern Roman Empire, for example as a ruling king of the heavens or as a child in the hands of the Virgin Mary. Both types of depictions can be found here at the auction, namely on the gold coin lots 5044, 5046 and 5047. We end in Austria with a Thaler from 1786, on which the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus are depicted.
