Works of Art on Paper

We are now launching a major online theme auction with older drawings and graphics. Works of art on paper are in a league of their own - with their delicate and sensitive beauty. Because of this unique quality there have always been passionate collectors who have collected and established famous collections.

A Diverse Medium

Alongside our international auctions in Bredgade and the "Art on Paper" fair at the Museumsbygning gallery, we want to celebrate works of art on paper with this online theme auction. A huge treasure of diverse works - exuberant, colourful, grey, black, sharp, loose, sketchy, meticulously detailed, yellowed and much more. Works of art on paper is still slightly underestimated here in Denmark, but make no mistake! There is a growing international awareness of the wealth that lies hidden among older Danish drawings. In 2013 the Metropolitan in New York bought a very fine small pencil portrait by Købke for the great hammer price of DKK 340,000 against an estimate of DKK 30,000-50,000.

Religious Etchings and Art from the Danish Golden Age

Pricewise, anyone can join the bidding - both if you want to establish a collection, own a single work by a famous artist or if you are interested in following an artist's working process. Among the highlights of the auction is a beautiful and unique collection of Bloch's religious etchings, which are in great demand in the United States.

There are also very fine drawings from the Danish Golden Age, including a corvette by Eckersberg, a little Italian girl with an orange by Lundbye, a shepherd boy by Rørbye and two Holberg characters by Marstrand.

Krøyer, Abildgaard and Thorvaldsen

The Skagen Painters are included as well of course. Krøyer with a touching portrait of a sleeping girl and Michael Ancher with a study of the famous fisherman from Skagen, Lars Gaihede, whom Rørbye also portrayed - before the Skagen Painters. The auction also includes pen drawings by Abildgaard from the 1700s and Thorvaldsen's sketch of Diana.

Auction and Preview

It is already possible to bid on the works now, but the hammer will only fall on Monday 21 September at 6 pm. The preview is open at Sundkrogsgade 30 in Copenhagen's Nordhavn from Wednesday 9 September until the auction day.
