Sculptures by Robert Jacobsen

At online auction No. 825, Bruun Rasmussen offers two of Robert Jacobsen's works for sale.

Robert Jacobsen (1912-1993) was born in Copenhagen, and in his early years he worked as an errand boy for Henning Larsen's art gallery in Copenhagen's Vognmagergade. Here, he was strongly attracted to the surrounding art scene. Robert Jacobsen made his first wood sculpture in 1930, and in 1935 he created his first "doll" from various discarded items.

Autodidact artist

Robert Jacobsen was an autodidact artist who worked in wood and stone, until he moved to Paris in 1947. From then on, his inspiration led him to work with abstract welded steel constructions in which surfaces and shapes formed a sublime balance in the work as a whole. He spent more than 20 years in France where he belonged to the international avant-garde in modern sculpture. Robert Jacobsen had close ties to the renowned Galerie Denise René with which artists like Vasarely, Poliakoff, Deyrolle, Magnelli and Dewasne were also affiliated. In 1969, Robert Jacobsen moved back to Denmark where he took up residence in Taagelund near Egtved.
