A foretaste of the spring auction
M.G. Bindesbøll: A set of ten beechwood chairs. Fashioned in the Pompeian style. Denmark, mid-19th century. Estimate: DKK 75,000–100,000.
Burchard Precht: Swedish baroque mirror in a gilt led frame with edges of faceted blue glass. Early 18th century. Estimate: DKK 100,000.
We will be opening our doors to the first international auction of the new year at Bredgade towards the end of March. Among the highlights this time will be furniture by M.G. Bindesbøll (1800–1856), one of the preferred architects of the Golden Age. He graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and undertook study trips all over Europe. The most famous building from his hand is Thorvaldsens Museum, erected in the years from 1838–48.
Are you dreaming of Pompeii?
However, Bindesbøll was also a designer of furniture, and in the same way that he approached the art of construction, here, too, he took his cue from the styles of previous eras. The auction will include a stool, a sofa and a set of ten chairs – all made of beechwood and fashioned in the Pompeian style popular in the mid-19th century. For the chairs, he also took inspiration from a drawing by N.A. Abildgaard, and they were some of Bindesbøll’s most popular pieces of furniture in his day. The furniture at the auction all comes from the Hornemann family.
Baroque reflections
Burchard Precht (1651–1738) is behind one of the other auction highlights: a superb baroque mirror of gilt lead with edges of faceted blue glass from the early 1700s. Precht was a sculptor, cabinetmaker and ornament sculptor, and originally came from Bremen. In 1674, he travelled to Stockholm, where he ended up doing most of his work – contributing to the interior of Drottningholm Slot (castle), for example.
