Purchase of the month
H.C. Lumbye’s violin from the late 19th century. Acquired by The Danish Music Museum in Copenhagen. Hammer price: DKK 16,000.
This is the third article in the series in which we put the spotlight on a noteworthy acquisition from the monthly online auctions. This time, we’re focusing on a musical instrument with a particularly prominent provenance: H.C. Lumbye’s (1810-1874) violin, which sold for a hammer price of DKK 16,000 in early September.
In its rightful place
The violin can now look forward to a future in its rightful place at The Danish Music Museum, which will shortly be moving its entire collection to the old Radiohus building on Rosenørns Allé in Copenhagen. Here, it will enjoy the distinguished company of other musical instruments from Europe, Asia and Africa from the 16th century to the present day.
Lumbye at full gallop
In 1843, H.C. Lumbye became the orchestra leader at Tivoli Concert Hall. Over the next 30 years, he composed nearly 700 dances, above all polkas, waltzes and gallops. One of his most famous works is “Champagne Galop” from 1845, which has become synonymous with his name. During the concerts in Tivoli, he would often conduct the orchestra while playing this very violin.
At the end of October, we’ll be bringing you the next article in the series on interesting acquisitions from our online auctions, at which we sell some 1,500 lots of art, antiques, design, jewellery and collectibles every week.
