Online Extra Auction 725

The many interesting items presented at the fourth Online Extra auction, held Wednesday June 20th, include portraits, seascapes, coastal sceneries, flower paintings and Russian art.

The Harbour Preview

The evening auction begins in our Harbour department with a portrait of a young Italian woman wearing a blue dress and the white kerchief so typical of Southern Europe that was meant protect the face against the sharp rays of the summer sun. This portrait was made by Wilhelm Marstrand (1810-1873), who is renowned for his Italian motifs, and it is estimated at DKK 40,000 – 50,000. In Marstand’s day, the use of a white kerchief as a means to protect oneself against the sun was not an exclusively Southern phenomenon. It was also common practice among fair-skinned women in the Danish countryside. This is evident in a painting by C.A. Schleisner (1810-1882), portraying an old woman in traditional regional attire with the so-called ‘eye-cloth’. This painting, estimated at DKK 4,000, is also an example of the Danish national-romanticist art of the 19th century that took particular delight in portraying the peasantry and its life and manners. A painting by Ernst Laub (1839-1867), depicting “A Peasant Woman of Lolland” wearing a wide kerchief, is another example of how people protected themselves against the sun in the past. Ernst Laub’s paintings are rarely seen at auctions, and this particular work is estimated at DKK 8,000 – 10,000.

In our Harbour department you will also find Peder Mønsted’s (1859-1941) highly evocative “A Winter’s Day in the King’s Garden”, estimated at DKK 100,000 – 125,000. In an altogether different genre, there is the ship’s portrait “The Brigantine Alroy of London”, painted by Reuben Chappel and estimated at DKK 8,000. If you have a penchant for the sea and sailing ships, you will also appreciate the coastal scenery by C.F. Sørensen (1818-1879), “Blok-Huus on the Shore of the North Sea 1875”, likewise estimated at DKK 8,000. In sharp contrast to this windswept scenery, we present two tranquil and ambient watercolours by Grand Duchess Olga (1882-1960), i.e. “Sunny Day at a Lake in the Forest” and “Lilacs in Bloom by a Garden Path”. Each work is estimated at DKK 8,000 – 10,000.

The Preview at Pedersholm in Vejle

The preview in Vejle presents e.g. “Interior with a Woman Standing by a Window”, painted by Poul Friis Nybo (1869-1929) and estimated at DKK 8,000. It will also be possible to contemplate “Scheidener Tag”, taking as its motif the evening atmosphere at a ‘Saxon farm’ in Schleswig-Holstein. The artist is the German painter Georg M. Meinzolt (1863-1948), and the painting is estimated at DKK 4,000 – 6,000. The Saxon farm is a typical exponent of an architectural style, several centuries old, that was in use south of the Schlei-Husum line. Like all other Saxon farms, Meinzolt’s is constructed upon an artificial mound so as to avoid the possible damage due to flood tides when storms hit the marshland. This special kind of architecture can still be seen in real life south of the Danish-German border or at The Open-Air Museum in Lyngby.

The department of Older Paintings wishes you a pleasurable experience at Online Extra 725.
