The overlooked handicraft
An ever increasing interest, especially from abroad, has meant high prices for modern furniture, ceramics and lamps. This has also meant a greater knowledge of these areas – among professionals as well as among private persons.
The Danish art of weaving, however, has been overshadowed by this flourishing market – in spite of the fact that this area offers an abundance of exiting works from acclaimed artists and designers.
It seems paradoxical that there is virtually no trade in rugs at the various auction houses, considering that there was once a close interplay between the art of textiles and the art of furniture-making.
The close interplay between Danish weaving and furniture is visible in e.g. the fact that the rugs and carpets of the acclaimed Danish weaver, Eva Koch, was once a regular feature of the exhibitions by her husband, Mogens Koch. The weaver Vibeke Klint was influenced by Kaare Klint, and furniture designer Finn Juhl always included, in addition to the Lundstrøm painting and the Erik Thommesen sculpture, a rug by Anna Thommesen in the exhibitions of his furniture. Furthermore, Børge Mogensen almost worked in tandem with Lis Ahlmann, just as Arne Jacobsen worked in close collaboration with Kirsten and John Becker.
Rugs on modern auction
At Bruun Rasmussen we have chosen to highlight this overlooked handicraft. Accordingly, we now introduce modern rugs and textiles as an independent area at our upcoming international modern auction. There are so many fine hand-woven rugs from highly skilled artists, and almost all our famous architects have designed textiles and rugs for companies such as LF Foght, C. Olesen, Gram, Gabriel and others.
We are therefore interested in consignments of for example works by: Anna Thommesen, Gerda Henning, Ea Koch, Paula Trock, Juliana Sveinsdottir, Vibeke Klint, Lis Ahlmann, Kim Naver, Jette Thyssen, Ruth Malinowksi, Krestine Kjærholm, Bodil Bødtker-Næss and Kirsten and John Becker.
In addition to this, we welcome consignments of rugs designed by: Arne Jacobsen, Ole Wanscher, Kaj Gottlob, Verner Panton, Tove Kindt-Larsen, Einar Utzon-Frank, Mogens Andersen and others.
We are also interested in Swedish rugs by for example Märta Måås-Fjetterström, Barbo Nilsson, Marianne Richter and Sigvard Bernadotte.
If you are in possession of modern rugs and textiles that you would like to sell, you are welcome to contact our Modern Department for a non-binding valuation.
