Edvard Munch
Edvard Munch: “La Promenade des Anglais” (1891). Estimate: DKK 7,000,000 – 10,000,000.
The painting was made during the artist’s rest cure in Nice, and the sketch-like and impressionistic rendition has an altogether different ring to it. The heavy paintings of the soul seem to have been swept aside by a hot Mediterranean breeze, and this particular painting has been interpreted as an expression of the artist’s rediscovered happiness after a long period of illness.
A year after it was made, “La Promenade des Anglais” was included in the 55 works Munch displayed at a highly controversial exhibition in Berlin. This exhibition was closed down a mere week after its opening, because it was felt that Munch’s highly personal and psychological works were offensive. The reviews in the Berlin newspapers described the exhibited works as, mainly, the products of a wild and immature imagination. This affair created a stir in the international art-world, and the scandalous closing of the exhibition brought about a positive turning-point in Munch’s career and helped kick-start his major international breakthrough. “La Promenade des Anglais” was exhibited in 1893 at Georg Kleis’s art gallery in Vesterbro, Copenhagen. Now, 113 years later, this painting is back in Copenhagen. This time, at Bruun Rasmussen’s in Bredgade where it can be experienced at the modern preview and auction in October.
Modern auction: October 9th – October 13th in Bredgade.
