Denmark and the sea
The kingdom of Denmark has a long shoreline which throughout history has made shipping a natural and significant business in Denmark. In the heyday of the sail ships in the 18th and 19th century cities like Copenhagen, Aabenraa, Svendborg, Marstal and Dragør as well as islands such as Ærø, Rømø and Fanø represented an extensive commerce and cultural exchange across many national borders. When Danish sailors went ashore after a rough life at sea, they would cherish their memories of travels in foreign parts of the world and life aboard the sail ships. Today, this is of benefit to people who are interested in nautical matters – also at this online auction in Bruun Rasmussen’s Harbour department.
Online theme auction in the Harbour department
The theme auction features many interesting maritime items. It includes, for example, a large “tell-tale” compass made by Iver Jensen of Copenhagen for Captain Jens Nielsen Holst, master of the brig Industria of Aabenraa. The glass case of the “tell-tale” compass bears the name of the captain as well as a ship’s portrait of Industria. The auction also includes a ship’s portrait of the galeas Frederike of Assens. It is painted as a hinterglass painting by the Belgian P.C. Weytz who is famous all over the world for this kind of ship’s portrait. In addition, the auction offers maritime literature, e.g. Frode Holm-Pedersen’s “Fra Sejl til Diesel” – a groundbreaking work on the history of Danish shipping. Finally, the auction presents several ship’s models, for example a more than one metre long model of the three-masted schooner, Tordenskjold.
We hope you will enjoy this maritime voyage at Bruun Rasmussen!
