Axel Johannes Salto (1889-1961)

Axel Salto was both a painter and a lithographic artist but not least a ceramist. What has made him widely famous are, among other things, his works in stoneware where he has created a personal terminology for his ceramic work:

“The budding style”; with use of fruit forms.

“The fluted style”; with more linear patterns.

“The sprouting style”; with use of flora subjects.

With these forms as well as his ability to make use of the glazes through the surface modelling, Salto has occupied a unique place in Danish ceramics.
