Copenhagen’s tallest sculpture

Børge Jørgensen’s 13-metre high sculpture “Dynamisk vækst” (Dynamic growth) from 1973, once Copenhagen’s tallest sculpture, is now being put up for auction.

In 1973, Danish sculptor Børge Jørgensen made the 13-metre high sculpture out of black-painted iron, steel and glass for the Tuborg brewery in Hellerup, just north of Copenhagen. The sculpture was originally a gift from Tuborgs Funktionærforening og Formandsforening (Tuborg Staff Association and Presidents’ Association) to mark Tuborg’s centenary and was designed to harmonise with the surrounding architecture. When the brewery in Hellerup closed in 1996, the sculpture was moved to Carlsberg’s head office at Vesterfælledvej 100 in Copenhagen, where it still stands for the time being.

As the title “Dynamic growth” suggests, the sculpture is a life-affirming and aspiring symbol of Tuborg’s growth, which, since the merger with Carlsberg in 1970, continues to conquer new markets around the world. Those interested in buying the colossal sculpture can inspect it on Vesterfælledvej. Please note that the buyer must cover the cost of dismantling and transporting the sculpture.

The artist behind the work

Early on in his career, Børge Jørgensen (1926–1998) predominantly made figurative sculptures in granite, but from the end of the 1950s developed an interest in more flexible materials such as sheet metal, steel and glass. From then on, he created abstract works inspired by the Danish sculptor Robert Jacobsen (1912–1993) and foreign sculpture. The balance between cubic and rounded forms would come to characterise his abstract mode of expression.

When, in 1963, he moved to the more rural surroundings of Odsherred, the landscape and nature became ever more important factors in his art. The natural growth is present in several of his iron sculptures, but becomes more pronounced as a bearing principle in the polished steel sculptures he made from the mid 1970s.

Børge Jørgensen’s sculptures are characterised by the interplay between the surroundings and the reflection of them in the polished steel. In an interaction between lightness and heaviness, between rough and smooth surfaces, he lends expression to something life-affirming, which is also reflected in many of the titles of his work.
