Bognemark – a recurrent theme in his works
Oluf Høst first saw the light of day on 18 March 1884 in Svaneke on the island of Bornholm, and despite the years he spent at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art in Copenhagen, his works overwhelmingly bear the stamp of his native island and its changing climate.
In 1929 he returned to Bornholm, where he married and started a family. The area around Bognemark is a recurrent theme which he returns to time and again in his works. Bognemark was a local smallholding which Høst would later himself take over in 1935.
From this vantage point he portrayed the farm itself, the sunsets and the impact of the seasons on the surrounding countryside, which Høst possessed an outstanding ability to observe and portray.
Oluf Høst’s style evolved over the years: his earlier works are weighty in their expression whilst his later works tend more to the abstract and are stamped by Høst's own mood and frame of mind.
