Christo Vladimirov Javacheff
Christo Vladimirov Javacheff was born in Bulgaria in 1935 and he has a long artistic history. He first studied painting, sculpture and stage design between 1953 and 1956 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia. The following year he focused on sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.
In 1958 he settled in Paris, where he also began his “wrapping projects”, and later in 1964 he moved to New York, where he began his “Store Fronts”. He wrapped his first building, the Berner Kunsthalle, in 1968.
In 1971, together with his artistic partner Jeanne-Claude he began his Wrapped Reichstag project and they produced the Surrounded Islands project in 1983, where eleven islands in Biscayne Bay close to Miami, Florida were surrounded by rings of floating pink polyester.
