Collection of Arne Schlesch up for auction
Arne Schlesch's collection
Antiques dealer and collector Arne Schlesch (1922-2010)
Consignment of art and antiques
Arne Schlesch had an utterly unique feel for exquisite antiques of the highest quality with an emphasis on baroque, rococo, Louis XVI and classicism. His estate will attract a great deal of international interest and we can therefore only recommend that you consign fine art and antiques as well as modern art and design for this year’s major art auction in December. For now, chances are there to sell effects at the same auction as Arne Schleschs collection.
Gentleman, man about town, aristocrat – these are some of the titles used to describe Arne Schlesch over the years. For 46 years, he ran an exclusive antiques shop in New York on the prestigious Upper East Side of Manhattan with unusual and rare art treasures that few people could even dream of. Here, renowned interior designers, presidential First Ladies and Hollywood stars would come in search of inspiration for their homes.
Arne Schlesch originally trained as a journalist and worked on the local Assens newspaper in Denmark during the Second World War. After the war, he became interested in antiques, and this proved to be the start of a glittering career. He decided to return to Denmark ten years ago. The collection from his personal address in Copenhagen is what we are offering at this year’s major art auction in December.
Exquisite antiques from the collection
The December auction includes antiques of a particularly exquisite Nordic and Northern German character, such as a pair of Northern German rococo giltwood mirrors from the Duchies, each with two silver arms and dating from the mid-18th century.
Also up for auction are a pair of large Canton “Famille Rose” enamel wall lamps from the first half of the 18th century, and a German Louis XVI David Röntgen dressing table created for the Russian market in the late 18th century.
Among the Danish antiques is a set of six rococo chairs of gilded beech, carved with mussel shells and upholstered in gilded leather from the mid-18th century. In addition, a Danish Harsdorff Louis XVI giltwood console with a Norwegian Gjellebæk marble top from the late 18th century is up for auction.
