Exceptional PH lamps

Poul Henningsen, better known by his initials PH, was a widely embracing talent as an architect, cultural critic, and satirical writer but it was his lamps that brought him fame in the 1920s. He grew up in the early years of electricity and as a young man he started developing complex theories about “the right lighting”.

Poul Henningsen’s “Spiral Lamp” is one of the most spectacular manifestations of his lighting theories and was originally custom designed for the Aarhus University Hall. The model now offered at auction is a smaller but equally rare example.   

In the 1940s, manufacturer Louis Poulsen was confronted with a stark challenge when producing the “Spiral Lamp”. The spiral shade, which is designed to look as if it were made of one piece, was complex and exceedingly costly to produce.

The “Spiral Lamps” are among the highlights of the autumn auction of modern art and design and are currently drawing wide interest. Please note that the auction of furniture, lighting and carpets/rugs will this time open on Monday 26 October when you can place your bid for the masterwork in mention designed by Poul Henningsen, among other.
