Mstislav Dobuzhinsky’s Danish muse

An entirely unique collection of works by the world-famous Russian artist Mstislav Dobuzhinsky is among many other items offered for sale at Auction No. 796. This private collection derives from a Danish woman with whom the artist was romantically involved. The romance went on for more than forty years, and the two lovers often met abroad. This comprehensive collection containing more than seventy works on paper is generally in very good condition. The collection is sold by the woman's Danish descendants.

Among the numerous important paintings included in the auction, we find Mikhail Vasilievich Nesterov's "Departure (A Commercial Traveller Leaves his Hotel)". This art-historically highly significant painting, made when the painter was merely seventeen or eighteen years of age, was identified by Professor Elena Nesterova after it was consigned to Bruun Rasmussen. In addition, the auction presents a spectacular portrait by Leonid Osipovich Pasternak. The portrait depicts the artist's niece, Lisa Jacobsson.

Another example of the many interesting paintings included in the auction is Vitali Gavrilovich Tikhov's evocative harbour scene in which the sparkling palette of post-impressionism is used for a masterly rendition of vivid colours and reflections in the water.

Many contemporary russian artists have made their mark internationally in recent years. One of them is Michail Chemiakin. Based in New York and Paris and with close ties to St. Petersburg, he is a truly international Russian artist. Auction No. 796 presents Chemiakin's "Petrouchka", a splendid example of his characteristic style.

The auction's prints and engravings include two hand-coloured contour-etchings by Benjamin Patersson. These fine specimens of Patersson's views of St. Petersburg were always held in high regard and they remain in undiminished demand today.

Furthermore, the auction contains a great number of high-quality art objects – bronzes, silver, porcelain etc. To name but a few examples, a magnificent collection of Russian plates in porcelain, and a samovar set in partly gilt silver.

The preview will take place in Bredgade from November 12-17 and the preview for our online auction will take place in Havnen from November 8-20.
