Princess Alexandra of Hanover and Cumberland (1882–1963) was the daughter of Duke Ernst August of Cumberland, Crown Prince of Hanover, and his wife, Princess Thyra of Denmark, daughter of King Christian IX and Queen Louise of Denmark. On 7 June 1904, Princess Alexandra married Grand Duke Friedrich Franz IV of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and they had, among others, the daughter, Princess Anastasia of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1923–1979). She married in 1943 Prince Friedrich Ferdinand of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (1913–1989). They became parents to the below mentioned sisters.

Grand Duchess Alexandra of Mecklenburg-Schwerin was honorary regimental commander of the 2nd Grand Ducal Mecklenburg Dragoon Regiment No. 18. The present dish is a gift from this regiment to the Grand Ducal Couple on the occasion of their silver wedding anniversary in 1929.
