Harald Giersing (b. Copenhagen 1881, d. s.p. 1927)

“To kvinder ved påklædningen” (Two Women Dressing), c. 1913. Unsigned. Oil on canvas laid down on compoboard. 93×122 cm.

Literature: V. Winkel & Magnussen (ed.): “Kunst i Privat Eje. Bind I”, Aage Pioras Forlag, Copenhagen, 1944, fig. 9, ill. p. 342. Exhibited: Giersing-Udstillingen, Stockholm and Copenhagen, 1958, cat. no. 31. Exhibited: Kunstforeningen, Copenhagen, 1979. Exhibited: “Portrætter og figurbilleder af Harald Giersing”, Statens Museum for Kunst (National Gallery of Denmark), Copenhagen, 1981, cat. no. 20. Provenance: Mr Chr. Kampmann, Copenhagen.

Originally the reverse of “Spain and Religion” (1917) (The New Carlsberg Foundation, deposited at the Glyptotek), which the then-owner Henrik Kampmann had it split from. However, “Spain and Religion” was actually the painting that had been made on the reverse of “Two Women at the dressing,” since the latter was definitely painted first. At the large exhibition in Stockholm in 1958, it was dated to 1912–14, while Haavard Rostrup later proposed in the catalogue for the exhibition at Kunstforeningen, Copenhagen, 1979, that it was made in 1914–17. If one compares the figure to the left with “A Lady in Black” (1913) (belongs to Mille Giersing), who appears to be wearing the same dress with a flap at the shoulder and whose face is almost completely identical with the former, and then compares the figure to the right with “Resting Model” (The Art Pavilion, Esbjerg), which Giersing himself dated to approx. 1913 in his list of paintings in unknown ownership, it seems that a dating of approx. 1913 would be most likely. The text by Art historian, Dr Lennart Gottlieb in the catalogue from Statens Museum for Kunst (National Gallery of Denmark) in 1981.
