L. A. Ring (b. Ring 1854, d. Roskilde 1933)

“Høj udenfor Hornbæk lille plantage. På toppen en siddende dame”. Small hill outside Hornbæk small plantation. On the top a seated young woman. Signed and dated L. A. Ring, den 31 August 89. Oil on canvas laid on panel. 13.5×33.5 cm.

H. Chr. Christensen, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of L. A. Ring no. 209 (here wrongly dated 1890).

Provenance: Revenue officer (amtsforvalter) Alexander Wilde (1910). Winkel & Magnussen auction 327, 1946 no. 49. Hotel owner Jens Udsen, Slagelse, his estate auction Winkel & Magnussen 343, 1948 no. 320.

The woman sitting on the mound is Johanne Wilde. She was married to Ring’s close friend, the painter and later district revenue officer Alexander Wilde, the first owner of the painting. The friendship with the married couple became crucial to Ring, not least because Johanne was the sweetheart of Ring's youth.

In this painting, Ring depicts the woman’s connection to nature. She is absorbed and almost disappears into it – becoming a natural part of the landscape. She sits with an upright back on the mound, and her yellow hat is set in a very fine contrast against the blue sky.
