Poul Kjærholm (b. Østervrå 1929, d. Hillerød 1980)

“PK 80”. Daybed with chromed steel frame. Loose mattress upholstered with original brown leather, fitted with buttons. Board of grey painted wood. Designed 1957. This example manufactured early 1970s by E. Kold Christensen. L. 190 cm.

The PK 80 daybed by Poul Kjærholm has today become one the most sought-after pieces within Mid-century Danish Design. Here Poul Kjærholm also finds inspiration in Mies van der Rohe and his classic couch from 1930. The daybed has a very low silhouette, and the construction of the frame with the separation of the legs from the rest of the piece gives it a visual lightness from the side, while it remains easy to read when viewed from the ends. Again, clarity and restraint in the construction make the piece surpass its predecessor.
