Arne Jacobsen (b. Copenhagen 1902, d. s.p. 1971)

A unique, freestanding three seater sofa with profiled frame of Italian nutwood, mounted with “shoes” of brass. Sides and back with woven cane. Loose cushions in seat and back upholstered with patinated natural leather, back cushions fitted with buttons. Designed 1927. Made 1927 by cabinetmaker Otto Meyer. H. 76.5 cm. L. 186 cm. D. 70 cm.

Provenance: Publisher Fergo, hence by descent in the family. The sofa was designed 17 February 1927 as part of the furnishing for a library room for Fergo. It consisted of a pair of easy chairs with an adjustable back, the present sofa, a pair of book cabinets with doors made of metal mesh and a low table with rounded corners.

The library room furniture was presented at the annual Spring Exhibition at Charlottenborg in 1927. The pair of chairs today form part of the collection of Design Museum Danmark. The cabinets remain with the Fergo family. The sofa belongs among the very first pieces of furniture that Arne Jacobsen designed. They demonstrate that even with Arne Jacobsen, a furniture designer generally associated with organic industrial modernism, the baggage of craftsmanship and English tradition of Kaare Klint is present. Arne Jacobsen studied with Kaare Klint for a period during his time at the Royal Academy.

A funny note regarding this sofa is that Cabinetmaker Otto Meyer from 1926–1948 ran his business and workshop from the address of Bredgade 33 in Copenhagen. In 1948, Arne Bruun Rasmussen acquired the building, and ever since this date our auction house has held viewings and sales at this address. Today, the sofa has returned to Bredgade 33, where it was made, and can now be seen at our viewing here after a short detour of 93 years with the Fergo family.
