Novgorod School, 16th century

A Russian icon depicting St. George defeating paganism and evil incarnate represented by the dragon. The lance pointed towards the animal's jaws is, however, more symbolic than real, since the lance is relatively thin and held with a light hand. Tempera on wood panel with a kovcheg. Novgorod School, 16th century. 30×23.5 cm.

Exhibited: The Gothenburg Museum of Art 1927, The National Museum in Oslo 1928, The National Gallery in Oslo 1930, Oslo Kunstforening 1957 and The Archbishop’s Palace Museum in Trondheim 1999.

Literature: Helge Kjellin: “Russiske ikoner i Norsk og Svensk eie”, Oslo 1956, mentioned and reproduced p. 126–127.

Provenance: Acquired by Richard Zeiner-Henriksen 1922–1931 in St. Petersburg.
