The Imperial Glass Factory 1909

A Russian clear glass vase, of compressed globular form, etched and engraved with six triangular panels alternately with the mitre crowned Imperial Russian double-headed eagle and scrolling foliage with flowers. Marked with the scratched mitre crowned Cyrillic H II 1909 for Tsar Nicholas II of Russia (1894–1917). The Imperial Glass Factory, St. Petersburg. H. 18 cm. Diam. 28.5 cm.

Similar decoration on a pair of vases in the Hillwood Museum Collection in Washington (inventory no. 23.128.1 and 23.128.2). These were designed by Piotr Ivanovich Krasnovskii and carved by Grigori Omrokov.

The decoration of the vase is historically inspired by Russian Renaissance motifs from the 17th century, which were very popular in Russia in the late 19th century and early 20th century. This includes the floral decoration itself but also the old form of the mitre crowned Russian coat of arms.

Provenance: Danish diplomate family. Acquired in Russia in the 1920s.
