West Berliners reacted with shock and anger when they realized on August 13, 1961 that the GDR authorities had started construction of the 'Berlin Wall' that same morning, and in the hot late summer days and nights following its initiation, thousands of ordinary citizens spontaneously gathered at Branderburger Tor in a silent protest against the separation that the communist regime in eastern Germany had now forced upon them. Until November 1989, the Berlin Wall would encircle the three western zones of the metropolis.
This is an original b/w silver gelatin press photograph from 1961, which shows normal signs of handling. No further remarks.
