The young girl reading is the local girl Maren Sofie Olsen. She is seated in a chair that today still can be seen in Ancher's house, now painted green.
Elisabeth Fabritius mentions that Michael Ancher was inspired to paint this lone figure in a nearly bare room by the Dutch interior paintings, he had recently seen when travelling to the Netherlands.
