Martin Paaskesen (b. 1987)

“Indian”, 2023. Signed on the reverse. Acrylic, oil stick, glue, canvas on canvas. 50×40 cm. Unframed.

The Danish artist Martin Paaskesen (b. 1987) lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark. Paaskesen explores the expressiveness and narrative of painting. His artistic approach is characterized by a fascination with abstraction and minimalism, which nevertheless often culminates in a semi-intended figurative expression. His process is very physical and tactile, especially with his patch paintings. He is literally present in the painting, perhaps because of his background as an actor where he learned to use his body in his expression. For the auction Paaskesen has donated the work “Indian” from the exhibition Flower Garden. In this series, Martin Paaskesen has made a deliberate choice to focus on a particular subject – the shark. This decision has established a dogma within his artistic practice, representing a fresh approach to his work. Opting for a specific subject might initially appear limiting, but it is an emancipating step that frees him from the constraints of an overburdened mind. This liberation opens mental space for the exploration and refinement of the core facets of his practice: composition, omission, and expression. Represented at Annika Nuttall Gallery.
