The artist couple Anna and Fritz Syberg (1862–1939) lived with their children in Pisa, Italy, in the years 1910–13, and here Anna made a number of watercolours. Art historian Lise Funder writes about these (in Danish): “Anna Syberg's watercolours from the Pisa period are among the finest she has produced. The strong southern sun, the baking heat and the bright colours that she experiences in Italy are reflected in her works. The painting style itself is also different, far more impressionistic than in the earlier watercolours. The paper she used in Italy was a much coarser type than what she was used to using, and this also gives her watercolours a different character.” (Lise Funder & Sys Hindsbo, “Anna Syberg 1870–1914”, Faaborg Museum, 2008, p. 56).
