Christian Mølsted (b. Dragør 1862, d. s.p. 1930)

Christian den 4de i Slaget paa Colberger Heide 1ste Juli 1644". King Christian IV of Denmark (1577–1648) in the Battle of Colberger Heide 1 July 1644. Signed and dated Chr. Mølsted 1898. On the reverse Christian Mølsted's handwritten note about the motif. Pencil, drawing ink, sepia and gouache on paper. Visible size 62×90 cm. The frame carved with the coat of arms of Denmark.

Provenance: King Christian X (1870–1947) and Queen Alexandrine of Denmark (1879–1952), Christian VIII's Palace at Amalienborg; hereafter their son and daughter-in-law, Hereditary Prince Knud (1900–1976) and Hereditary Princess Caroline-Mathilde of Denmark (1912–1995), Christian VIII's Palace at Amalienborg; thereafter their son, His Excellency Ingolf Count of Rosenborg (b. 1940) until today.

Noted in Danish on the back (behind the backing) along with the title: Present from Kapt: Næser to Prince Christian May 1898". Based on this dating, the picture must have been a wedding present to Prince Christian (X) and Princess Alexandrine of Denmark on 26 April 1898. The wedding took place in Cannes and the gift was handed over to the newlyweds at their subsequent arrival in Denmark. The note is presumably written by Christian Mølsted.

Wholesaler, captain and councilor Albert Næser (1841–1913) was Christian Mølsted's patron. At the bottom of the frame on the present picture is a plaque with a poem, signed by a member of the Næser family.

Condition

The paper has turned slightly brown. A few minimal discolourations. Examined in frame.
