Hammershus Castle is the largest castle ruin in Northern Europe. Newer research and excavations from 2015 seem to prove the fact, that the castle was ready for use around the year 1300 and was built by Jens Grand (1260–1327) – Archbishop in Lund from 1289–1302. The fortress was built to consolidate control of the island and was the stronghold for various rulers.
