Ole Wanscher (b. Frederiksberg 1903, d. Charlottenlund 1985)

Freestanding mahogany ladies desk with profiled legs. Top with eight small letter compartments. Front with two drawers in rail, handles and fittings of brass. This example made 1950–1960s by cabinetmaker A.J. Iversen. H. 73,5/88 cm. L. 115 cm. W. 66 cm.

Provenance: Private Danish collection.

Ole Wanscher’s furniture appears, both at the time of creation and in the present time, as an exponent of the most classical furniture design, with an almost mathematical approach, probably due to his education, both as an assistant to and later student of professor Kaare Klint. Through a longstanding collaboration with cabinetmaker A.J. Iversen, Ole Wanscher developed a number of exclusive furniture pieces, which are considered highlights within Danish furniture design, and of a particularly high quality. In the book about his 25 years as a cabinetmaker from 1941, Iversen described his work philosophy: “The cabinetmaker creates the home in which the family grows up and live their lives – here, nothing can be too good nor too beautiful. People who have good homes are happy and healthy people. Can any work be more beautiful than that of the cabinetmaker?”.
