After Paul Gauguin returned to Europe from his first Tahitian journey in 1893, he began working on “Noa Noa” (Tahitian for “fragrance”), a book project based on his experience and illustrated with woodcuts. Although never realized in their intended form, both the text and the ten woodcuts for “Noa Noa” survive among Gauguin's seventy-eight printed compositions in woodcut, etching, and lithography. In 1921 the artist’s son, Pola Gauguin, printed a posthumous edition of the woodblocks, which was published as the here present portfolio.
