Michael Ancher (b. Bornholm 1849, d. Skagen 1927)

Provenance: The estate auction of Helga Ancher, Bruun Rasmussen auction 193, no. 132, ill. p. 23.

Ancher started the finished painting in 1875, and there are many sketches. This one shows his work process leading up to the final result. He also describes the work process and thoughts about painting in many letters to his girlfriend Anna Brøndum, who had traveled to Copenhagen to study.

Condition

In need of a light surface cleaning. The canvas is relined.
