Paul Fischer (b. Copenhagen 1860, d. Gentofte 1934)
Winter day in front of 'Sakramentskirken', Copenhagen. Signed Paul Fischer. Oil on wood. 25×20 cm.
Paul Fischer has painted Copenhagen many times in all kinds of weather and he once said in an interview (in Danish): “I like Copenhagen best when the snow softens the contours or the light shines on the rain-soaked asphalt.” (Jane Sandberg p. 28). The present painting is a great example of his skill. Along the snow-covered Fælledvej in Copenhagen, we have a direct view of the Sacrament Church with its two towers rising above the surrounding buildings. On the left side of the work, the Odeon Theatre from 1925 can be seen - one of Copenhagen’s old, traditional premiere cinemas.
Literature: Jane Sandberg, “Paul Fischer - Ingen kan tjene alle til takke”, 2005.
