León Augustin Lhermitte (b. Mont-Saint-Père 1844, d. Paris 1925)

The cross in Mezy. 1877. Unsigned. Inscribed ”Debout”, ”debout près de marches, ”3c de marches”, ”à genoux”. Black chalk on two joint pieces of blue paper. 31×35 cm.

Preliminary study for the now lost drawing Visite au cimetière de Mezy, that was exhibited at Dudley Gallery, London, in 1878. Shortly after Lhermitte used the drawing again, when he on request altered his painting Le marché aux pommes de Landerneau, now at Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Provenance: The artist's estate (L. 3890). The step daughter of the artist, Jean Lhermitte b. Marcelle Duflocq (1895–1982).
