“Devil's Bridge #8”, 2010. Ed. 1/5 + 2 AP. Fiberprint. Comes with certificate of authenticity signed Ebbe Stub Wittrup. Visible size 43×54 cm.

The mythical, medieaval devil's bridges of Southern Europe make up the motifs in Ebbe stub Wittrup's series of the same name – inspired by Bernd and Hilda Becher's iconic, conceptual photographic series of industrial constructions.

The bridge “Ponte diable arrienne” in Lille, France the intriguing motif in this photograph. The bridge made crossing possible in the most unlikely place. And once build - the story goes - the devil would take the first passing soul as payment for the completion of the difficult construction.

The series delves into a sphere between the reel and unreel. They were made with a large format camera realistically documenting every detail of the medieaval bridges and its mythical arched structure, including the illusion of a “hole” or passing to another realm – but it is exactly that, an illusion, something unreal.
