2509/176

Original b/w press photograph of New Zealand mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary (1919–2008) and his companion, Nepalese Tenzing Norgay Sherpa (1914–1986), on top of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953. Back with news telegram dated July 20, 1969. Photograph and telegram later glued on cardboard sheet. Red painted wooden frame with double glazing. Visible size 25×20 cm. Frame size 26×21 cm.

Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa were the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest, but several others had tried before them - some with fatal results. In 1921, 1922, 1924 and 1933, British expeditions had tried unsuccessfully to reach the same goal.

A similar press photograph was sold at Bruun Rasmussen's auction 2424 as lot 175.
