Theodor Hildebrandt (b. Stettin 1804, d. Düsseldorf 1874)
Two portraits of Duke Eugen of Württemberg (1820–1875) and his wife, Duchess Mathilde of Württemberg, née princess of Schaumburg-Lippe (1818–1891). He signed with monogram and dated 46, she unsigned. Oil on canvas. 26×22 cm. and 24×21 cm., but adapted in a pair of similar frames to appear identical in size. (2).
The gentleman's portrait must relate to the same artist's three-quarter length portrait of the Duke, also dated 1846. This was sold on 30 March 2022 as lot no. 1449 at Neumeister Auctions Munich on the themed auction “Hidden Treasures- Schätze aus dem Hause Württemberg”.
The ducal couple of Württemberg was married 1843 in Bückeburg west of Hanover. Duchess Mathilde's sister, Princess Adelheid of Schaumburg-Lippe (1821–1899), married in 1841 Duke Friedrich of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, head of the family 1878–1885. This latter couple was parents to among others Duke Frederik Ferdinand of Glücksburg and Prince Albert of Glücksburg. The latter became grandfather to the sisters mentioned below.
