Alvar Aalto (b. Kuortane 1898, d. Helsinki 1976)

An early “stacking chair” with birch frame. Seat and back upholstered with original rust red wool with brown stripes. Model 611. Designed 1929. This example made early 1930s by Huonekalu-ja Rakennustyötehdas Oy, Turku, Finland. Retailed by Finmar Ltd. with metal tag.

Model 611 is one of the first modernistic chairs by Alvar Aalto. In 1928, Aino and Alvar Aalto travel through France and Holland. On this trip they visit the annual exhibition “Congrès International d'Architecture Moderne” (CIAM). This expo inspired the Aalto's to adopt the modernistic, international design style.
